Adult Ed

GED links at the bottom

Although most of this site revolves around younger students I have also taught adults for 20+ years.   I've taught first division classes at the community college level where I assist with student research projects and help students to develop both written work and deliver presentations.

A lot of adult education does not lend itself to nice visuals as much as elementary education.  I've included some student work below that I had pictures of.

The above shot is Meisha doing a presentation concerning various common words for environments that must be learned to satisfy ODE science benchmarks in the elementary grades.

This next shot is a student doing a presentation on food and food imagery.  It's sometimes difficult for students to get in front of their peers and do a presentation. They all worry about it quite a bit and it always comes out just fine.  Everybody learns how to type up clear handouts, sequence events, plan for necessary materials, deliver a short speech, and answer questions from the audience.  I tell them they are building poise and self confidence: they go into it with anxiety and come out of it with a smile.

Another nice presentation with food as the subject matter.  As the class goes on it becomes somewhat of a friendly competition to see who can look the best prepared and everybody learns from those who come before them.

I've taught GED subject matter at the Lake County Juvenile Justice Center many years ago and continue to  do so, on a more ad hoc basis, to the  parents of my students.  I use various printed and online materials. I like to do a lot of work with time, money, and measurement along with writing summaries, sequencing, and filling out job applications.

I've used the TABE assessments, Steck-Vaughn and some of the archived, high school, ODE  assessments for placement along with other printed, computer based and online assessments.

In terms of materials, I tell students to go to the library and see what they have and then purchase, when they find what they like.  I've used the materials from Barrons, Wieser, and the McGraw Hill, Contemporary series.   They all have their good points and I don't mean to suggest that the ones I'm listing here are better than others I have not listed here.  These are just ones I'm remembering as I'm typing.

Below are some online tests students can use and some of them can be printed.
