2nd Grade Sample Curriculum

Below is an example of an abbreviated plan for second grade  that I used a few years ago.  It is by no means a final word or a completely detailed list, but it should give you an idea as to my general game plan. I've done similar plans for other grades, I'm just including this as an example of what I can do and to let parents know the order of events in the classroom.

I based this student assessments the first few weeks, on looking at old archived tests, and the ODE grade level benchmarks.

Daily

Literacy block begins at 8:30.  It is divided up as follows:

8:30-9:00-Phonics, vocabulary, and word study.

9:00-9:30-Writing sentences, paragraphs, or letters based upon the words studied.

9:30-10:00-Reading short stories from text books, handouts, or small books and then answering questions provided with the story or answering who, what, where, when, and why questions about the materials read.

10:00-10:30-All students will be working on the computer with a program by the name of Waterford        Reading.  I don't know much about it at this time but it's a program designed to help students read better.

10:30-11:30-Math block, new math concepts are presented and reviewed.

12:30-1:30- More Math!  At this time we will probably review and finish with what was talked about and introduced in the morning math session and be working in workbooks or binders.

About the above and daily curriculum

In addition to the subject matter above, many other things are to be covered.  In general, I work from the ODE list of what should be covered in 2nd grade, if you look below you'll see the state standards link, that pretty much covers what I'm trying to teach all year long. I try to present and review work on a daily basis.  As an example, in the first week, in literacy class, we will discuss synonyms, antonyms, then add, as time goes along, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, homonyms, contractions, prefixes, suffixes, root words, etc.  These concepts are then reviewed on a daily basis. Math runs in very much the same way, as an example we will start with place value and symmetry and then begin going over basic concepts of money, telling time, and measurement. As new subject matter is added, I also try to go over, on a daily basis what was covered the day before.  Again, if you ever have any questions about what is being done, stop by, call, or e-mail me.

If I'm am seeing your child through special education you can look at the IEP to get an exact idea of what I will be working on with your child. If you've misplaced your child's IEP or ETR I can print out another for you or e-mail you a PDF.

Incidentals:

Every day your child should come home with something from every subject.  If they don't, you need to call me at home, 440.354.5491 or e-mail me at miketayse@gmail.com.  Communication is encouraged!  Please feel free to contact me at any time and on a regular basis. You are welcome to stop by at any time without any warning. Really!  I don't mind at all, in fact, I would love it.  If your child knows we talk and you value education, it can only be a help.

The above list is by no means a complete list of all thing being done, it is intended more as a rough draft of the year.  If you want to see a weekly lesson plan it is on a clipboard hanging on the wall or I can e-mail it to you. If you look at the math and literacy workbooks you can get a good idea as to concepts and subject material that is being covered on a daily basis.  We read daily from grade level and below grade level materials and questions usually occur at the end of the story that aim towards comprehension.  I try to listen to each student once or twice a week and have them do repeated readings to work on fluency, you can do the same with any book.

Anything you do with time, money, or measurement can only be a good thing.  Everything you know about time, money, or measurement, they have to know eventually. Generally the sooner, the better.

Any book you read with your child( or tv show they watch) can be related to questions relating to who, what, where, when, and why.  Read anything and discuss, comprehension is what we are working towards.

Every student will eventually have their own  binder(s) and workbook(s) for both  literacy and math.  I have many supplemental materials to get to you once I get to know your child.  Please see me as soon as possible to get these.  Your being involved in their daily education is essential for their success in school.

We usually take a snack break in the morning, if you want your child to have a snack, please send something with them.  I ask that is not be candy bars and at least resemble something that is not bad for them, hopefully healthy!  Stuff that can be eaten with out a lot of mess is certainly appreciated.

If you look at the links page you will see some useful links to educational sites.  The ODE stuff can be very useful for understanding what the tests will look like for your child next year in third grade.  My goal is for your child to assimilate all the necessary 2nd grade subject matter so that when they sit down to take the 3rd grade ODE test for reading they do well. If you need anything printed, please don't hesitate to ask.
