The following word lists are some common lists of words and phrases that various educational groups have decided that students should know. If all you do is have the students study and read the words and phrases without also reading books and using the words and phrases in context, your missing the point. Kids like to be read to and they like to read to adults. It's good for both of us. Words are only a component of reading and more a means to an end. The "end" being the comprehension of the world of print. Ultimately the child needs to be able to make sense of the words and use the words to make sense in his or her own writing.
The fact that we all are able to perceive the 26 letters of the alphabet and then the approximately 50 sounds that they go with them is nothing short of amazing. But then to string these symbols into words and then into sentences that are able to almost completely depict the complete human experience is nothing short of magic. Truly, reading can transform; satori, enlightenment, and education on the cheap.
It's nice to study the words and it's an easy thing to use as a primitive and partial measure of a students reading ability. Hopefully the following word lists will be useful. I'm posting the lists followed by a link to a printable version of the lists.

All children, in first grade, should be able to read most of the words below. The nice thing
about word families is they have a certain, inherent, sense of logic, if you can spell one you can probably spell the others. If the child can spell cat they can probably spell fat, hat, and so fourth and so on. You can make up simple sentences involving any word family. Like; "The fat cat had a hat and sat on the mat". All the words below were typed in by one of my 2nd grade students, who, at the time, was considerably off grade level and was still having trouble with initial sounds! It took him quite awhile and represents quite a bit of work. I would not let him type the words in until he could recognize and use them in a sentence. A year later he seems to be happy, well adjusted 3rd grader and is pretty much, on grade level.

Johnnie typed most of the list himself-no small accomplishment! He would type the words and then read them back to me. On occasion, I would sit down to type and he would read some more words to me as I typed. The added to list went home daily and was used in various ways by other students. It is set to print at a smaller font, so that the entire list will fit on the front and back of a piece of paper. At school I usually run this and other word lists through a plastic laminator, looks nicer-lasts longer.

Another piece of learning new vocabulary words is what to do with words you don't know. The poster that hangs on the wall (given to me by the most wonderful Ms. Cottom, in a series of after school informational workshops) goes on to delineate the process of how to figure out a word. My students have a small card of these sentences that I have laminated that they are to keep with them. Of course they lose them on a regular basis, but I have more. I'm putting three links below: a large printable version, a small printable version, and a printable sheet of 4 per page (the one I use) of the poster above.

Once upon a time, there were four brothers who lived in a far away land. Their father was an old king. One day he said, "I will not live long now. Today you must start out into the world. In a year, bring back the best thing you have found. The one who can pick the best thing shall be the new king." The first brother said, "I will look in every city or town. I will buy the best thing I can for my father." The next two brothers said, "We will both go on fast ships over the sea. We will find something better." The last brother said, "I am going to ask the people here in our own land to tell me the best thing." The other three brothers began to laugh. "Then you will never be king!" They said.
The
last brother started off. When he had gone about six miles, he met a
man. "What do you carry in those big bags?" he asked. "The best thing in
the world," said the man. "These are full of the good nuts which fall
from my five nut trees." "I don't think that would work," said the
brother to himself, "I must try again." The brother went on another
seven miles. He found a small brown bird. It had been hurt, so he put it
in his coat where it could keep warm. As he went on, he saw a little
girl crying. He ran to meet her. "Why are you crying?" he asked. "I want
to get some water from the well," she said. "We use so much. We drink
cold water. We wash the clothes clean with hot water. But I do not know
how to pull it up. Please show me." The brother said, "Hold this bird

jump and play. Some said the green grass was best. Some liked the red
and blue and white flowers best. One man said the best thing was to ride
a black horse. He always stopped to help people who needed it. Soon he
made many friends. All the people began to like him. They would say,
"See there goes the king's son. He would be just the right kind of king
for us." Every door was open to him. The people would call to him to
stop. They would ask him to come and eat with them. After he ate, he
would sit down and read to the children. After he read, he showed them
how to draw and write. Months went by. He still had no beautiful thing
to take to his father. Just before the year was done, he went home
again.
The time came when the king called his sons
together. "What did you bring?" He asked them all. The other brothers
had many beautiful things. "And what did you bring?" said the king to
the last brother. "This is too funny!" said the other brothers. "He has
nothing!" But the king was kind to the last brother. "What did you bring
me?" the king asked again. "I bring only the friendship of your
people," said the last brother. "That is the best thing!" cried his
father. "You shall be the new king."
