Ice Cream Making

The reason we make ice cream is...

_____________________________________________

A quick look at all the pictures and you might think to your self it was my idea to make ice cream.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  I happened to be scheduled to be in Ms. Gray's classroom to work with some of my little charges and the first grades were all banding together on that particular day to make ice cream.
Ms. Brickweg, Ms. McCall, and Ms. Gray were going above and beyond the call of duty on this particular day and were attempting to ride herd over the project of making ice cream with approximately 80 first graders.  A prospect that would put other, lesser teachers into a severe panic.  Because, let's face it, there is really no real way to do this sort of thing without descending into partial chaos.
I cook and make stuff on a regular basis so I zipped down the hall and grabbed a couple of my 2nd graders to stage a few pics and to provide me with an assignment the next day. I am that kind a of a self serving individual, it's a shame, but there you are.  You'll see  some of the assignments as you scroll down.
A good time was had by all and I thank everybody in the 1st grade for letting me help out!

The first step is lining students up with a ziplock bag.
Sounds easy.

_______________________________________

In goes the 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla.

______________________________________

The 1 tablespoon of sugar is added next, although the
actual order of ingredients is not important.

_________________________________________

Then a one cup measure of milk is added.

________________________________________

With the 1 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and
1 tablespoon sugar safely stowed away inside
the bag, a trained professional checks the integrity
of the sealed ziplock. Then, this bag of stuff
is put into another bag containing ice, sealed up
and given a good gentle shaking.

The steps again are as follows: open a ziplock
and put in a tablespoon of sugar.

_____________________________________

Add a 1/2 teaspoon or so of vanilla.

Any time I do a project/activity, I usually have the students do a writing assignment that involves sequencing what they have done.  Anything to make writing and new vocabulary words a little more interesting.  Plus it makes good stuff to hang up on the walls. Below is  a student version of how to make Ice Cream.  I had the student do a sloppy copy and then type it in on the computer. It takes more time than you'd imagine for a 2nd grader to type reasonable  copy, go figure.   After the student has typed it into "Word " I cut and paste it into Google Documents, so I can post it as a printable link.

After all the ingredients are put into a small ziplock bag,
the small ziplock bag of ingredients is put into
a larger ziplock bag of ice with a little bit of
rock salt sprinkled in (it helps to quickly lower
the temperature) and then the bag of ice with the bag of
ice cream ingredients inside is shaken and tumbled
by the student.  They really like this part!

I didn't get any good pictures of the kids shaking and tumbling the bags, but this shot is of students lined up and handing their bags to Ms. Gray who was helping the children with removing the ice cream bag from the larger bag of ice after the ice cream had set up.  It didn't take to long. for the ice cream ingredients to be converted into ice cream.

The shots above are of the ice cream being removed from the ziplock bags.  The students would open their bag of ice cream (or milkshake, if they did not have the necessary patience for the ice cream to set up) and then attempt to scoop and/or squeeze the ice cream from the bag.

The next day I had  my students write down/list all the words that had anything to do with ice cream making.  Then I had the students make a sheet of questions relating to the words.  Miss Aletha's is below. She wrote the sloppy copy and then did all the necessary typing. I cut and pasted it into Google Documents and then converted it into a printable web page, the link will be below.  She did a great job!
